Only founded in 2017 and promoted to Liga MX in 2019, Atletico de San Luis are enjoying, possibly the club’s most successful spell as they top the Liga MX Apertura 2023 table following Sunday’s victory over Atlas. After seven games of the season played, Gustavo Leal’s side have amassed 16 points with five wins, one draw and just one loss with their Alfonso Ballasts stadium becoming something of a fortress.
Atlas from Guadalajara were the latest side to fall in San Luis Potisi and the ‘rojinegros’ are still struggling to replace the losses of Julián Quiñones, who move to Club América; Julio César Furch who moved to Brazilian side Santos and Ozziel Herrera who moved to Nuevo Leon based Tigres. Atlas now sit in ninth place in the rankings and have only managed two wins all season.
Bilbao and Leo were on the scoresheet for San Luis who face Pumas (away) and Mazatlan at home in the next two games of the Liga MX campaign with a place in the playoffs very much a reality for the side owned by LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid.
